John Stephens

John Stephens, was born on August 30, 1945 in Fort Worth, Texas and died on June 18, 2001 at University Hospital in Oklahoma City as a result of injuries from an automobile accident outside his workplace in Pauls Valley Tuesday, June 5, 2001. He will be missed by many people for his compassion for his fellow man. He lived in Oklahoma City where he attended elementary schools. He moved to Norman where he graduated from Norman High School in 1964. He lived in New York for a time and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy from Syracuse University at Utica on May 22, 1977 with a dual major in psychology. He was licensed as an Occupational Therapist in the State of Oklahoma and is Registered through the National Board of Occupational Therapy. Mr. Stephens worked as a Psychiatric Occupational Therapist at Griffin Memorial Hospital through 1984, then began working in the specialty area of Developmental Disabilities within the Occupational Therapy Department of Southern Oklahoma Resource Center in Pauls Valley in May, 1985 where he wa employed at the time of his death. He was active in many organizations of physical, sensory and intellectual disabilities. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maureen Stephens who died on April 30, 2001. He is survived by his parents, Don and Alvena Stephens of Norman; two children, Lauri Young and her husband Brent and Scott Butler and his wife Cayla of Tulsa; his aunts Lee Thume of Detroit and Beatrice Stephens of Oklahoma City, uncles and aunts Luther and Lulu Stephens of Oklahoma City and Charles an Maxine Hickok of Bethany and grandchildren Taryn Young, Jacquelyn and Autumn Butler of Tulsa. He was a member of McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church in Norman. Services will be held at Mayes Funeral Home in Norman at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2001.
