LEGUTKI

My LEGUTKI ancestors come from the town of Siemiechow, near Tarnow, Poland. My grandfather left Siemiechow and made it to Chicago, Illinois. I've done some research on the line in the LDS records of the town, and have gotten the line back to pre-1800. In the records of Siemiechow, part of the family went by the last name LEGUTKO.

Have been told by a librarian working at the Polish Museum of America in Chicago that the spelling LEGUTKI would not be correctly used as a surname. The spelling LEGUTKI would refer to the whole family, and in the case of "the SMITHS," and LEGUTKO would be the correct surname, as SMITH.

04/2011: I am very excited to report that I have been contacted by a LEGUTKY family from the Czech Republic. I was able to track them down through a link from the Milan Legutky photographic web pages. I was able to construct a partial family from the information on the pages, and contacted some of the names listed. I have since found out that they are from Siemiechów! They are definitely cousins! With the information they have shared with me, I have found that their ancestor left a family in Poland to find work in Pennsylvania. His brother is the immigrant ancestor of the families described below that moved to Ohio, Nevada, and possibly Florida. The work continues!

12/2010: Looks like we have three LEGUTKI lines. One, described below (11/2010) that centers in Ohio during the 20th Century and seems to hail from Pennsylvania. The second, which centers in Florida during the last half of the 20th Century, possibly tracing back to Pennsylvania in the early 20th Century. The third line (mine), centers in Chicago during the 20th Century, and hails from the town of Siemiechów, near Tarnow, in Poland. I am sure there must be some connection between the three lines. LEGUTKI is not a common name, so there must be some connection. If you have any information on the LEGUTKI line, or any LEGUTKx root line and would like to share, please be sure to contact me! Recently (11/2010) we have been able to determine a long line of a LEGUTKI family that stretches from Nevada (Las Vegas) back through Ohio (Cincinnati) and back to Pennsylvania (Fayette co). This family line goes back to Poland, and there is a slight possibility that it ties in with the author's line originating in Siemiechów. More research time in the Salt Lake Family History Library is needed to verify this possible connection.
