Level/Grade Correlations

Each of the curricula above can correspond to a specific grade in public schools, but the content won't be the same as you'd find in a standard public school curriculum. Here is how I use them:

The Playroom: Joyschool (age 0-4 years)

The Bear Basics: Preschool (age 3-5 years)

Awakening Woods: Kindergarten (Age 5 within 4 weeks of the start of school)

The Engine Room: First Grade (Age 6 within 4 weeks of the start of school)

Emerald Hill Zone: Second Grade (Age 7 within 4 weeks of the start of school)

Magma Opus: Third Grade (age 8 within 4 weeks of the start of school)

Omegamatic Warp Drive: fourth Grade (age 9 within 4 weeks of the start of school)

The Island of the Wicker People: Fifth Grade (Age 10 within 4 weeks of the start of school)

Fine Arts Palace: Sixth Grade (age 11 within 4 weeks of the start of school)

Cave of the Past: Seventh Grade (age 12 within 4 weeks of the start of school)

Sector Z: Eighth Grade (age 13 within 4 weeks of the start of school).

However, The Bear Basics is very similar to many Kindergarten-level curricula, and Awakening Woods is drawn from mostly first-and second-grade level materials and corresponds to what many children learn in First Grade.

Also, the last seven curricula on the list (Emerald Hill Zone through Sector Z) can actually be done in any order. Just make sure your child is mature enough for the literature presented that year, and be prepared to do more explaining to a seven year old than you would need for a thirteen year old.

Remember that these were designed with gifted kids in mind. Don't assume that because I use The Engine Room for first grade that it is too easy for your gifted child (like most first grade curricula admittedly are). In fact, this might be too hard! Check it out and place your child in the level that is most appropriate for them

Why not use grade levels?
