Soldiers' Farewell Social.

On Monday evening in the District Hall a farewell social was tendered to Pts Jack Chapman and Percy Weatherspoon. There was a large gathering of relatives and friends present. Music for the dances was supplied by Mesdames A. Harry and F. Harford, (piano) and Miss M. Harry (piano-accordian). Mrs H. J. C. Hughes and Miss M. Simmonds delighted the audience by singing two duets. Mr E. Wheaton carried out the duties of M.C. Pte Wardrop, a son of a former Union Bank official was among those present. The Chairman of the Kingscote Council, (Mr R. Wheaton) on behalf of the residents expressed their good wishes towards the Guests of Honour, and complimented them on their patriotism, wishing them a safe and speedy return. He also apologised for the absence of Mr and Mrs R. W. Chapman and Mr H. W. H. Seager, and he extended a welcome to Pte. Wardrop,stating that old residents remembered his mother and late father, who resided at Kingscote for several years. Mr H. P. Roper spoke of his close association with Pte. Weatherspoon who had been an official of the Cygnet River Tennis Club for several years. He has known both the soldiers for seventeen years and had seen them grow up from childhood to manhood. He joined with the Chairman in extending to them the best wishes of the residents. Mr A. E. J. Bennet made the presentations. Both the Soldiers briefly responded. Supper was then served, the evening closing with the singing of " Auld Lang Syne
