The Great Stone Dam Classic actually consists of three races, all happening at the same time. Since these races share the same start/finish line, we start racers in waves grouped by race distance, and by boat class. This means you don't have to deal with the chaos of a mass start.

We start everyone in the long ("racing") course first, followed by everyone in the short ("recreational") course. For each race distance we start boats grouped by hull types. This means you'll be starting with other folks paddling similar hulls, and can race each other fair and square. Each boat type grouping starts in its own wave.

Each wave of racers has its own starting time. We send these waves off about one minute apart, with the first wave starting at 11:00am. What does all this mean for you on race day? It means give yourself plenty of time to get on the water and get in your warm up, then paddle well behind the starting line and chill while you listen to the pre-race safety briefing. When your wave is called, paddle slowly up to the starting line, and stop. Only line up when your wave is called! Then, when you hear the air horn go off, it's time to race!

You'll find descriptions of the race courses here. You'll find a list of boat categories here. You need to know which race, and what boat type you're paddling, to complete your registration form and to line up in the correct starting wave.

Here is the starting order of the various waves from first to last. The 8.6-mile course paddlers start first, by wave, followed by the 3.5-mile course paddlers, also by wave. There are eight (8) waves in all. Waves go off about one minute apart, so be ready to line up when called!
