Water Quality

Water Clarity is used as a primary indicator of water quality. To measure water quality in lakes, we use what is called a Secchi Disk. The disk is lowered at very specific spots in the lake until it is no longer visible. The point it disappears is termed the Secchi depth. Aquatic plants help immobilize sediments and improve water clarity, even if they are invasive weeds.

Foam frequently appears after wind swept waves agitate the waters of the lake. This foam is believed to be composed of organic compounds found naturally in the lake. These compounds originate from decaying plant and animal materials in and around the lake.
