Personal identity can be very complex. Ethnic identity alone is determined by cross-cutting factors, including language, racial characteristics, national heritage and religion. 

Ethnic identities factor into a wide variety of cultural practices – including politics, religion, marriage and economics. Geography play a significant role in the creation, maintenance and erosion of ethnic identity.
