Where people violate the rules and norms of society and how they are punished is a matter of significant interest to geographers.  In many ways, the choices societies make about dealing with criminal behavior is an extension of their political culture, but crime is so fascinating and important to us, that it seems worthy of a separate chapter seems .

Spatial perspectives and a variety of the tools used by geographers are successfully applied to the study of crime, advancing public safety and a greater understanding of the successes and failures of the criminal justice system.
