ENG 202, Major Assignment 1: Standard Email and Standard Memorandum

For the Standard Email and Standard Memorandum assignment, students are to compose a properly formatted business email to which they will attach (in .rtf, .doc, .docx format) a properly formatted memorandum (keep in mind that the memorandum is to be treated as a printed page, rather than an online page). Formatting guidelines are discussed in the textbook readings assigned in the weeks preceding the due date of the assignment and during class discussion.

The required content of the email is as follows:

  • Student name

  • Instructor name

  • Subject: Standard Email Assignment for ENG 202, Section [Insert the appropriate section number here]

  • Brief discussion of the process intended for discussion in the upcoming process analysis paper (noted on the syllabus and course calendar, discussed here)

  • Student contact information

The required content of the memorandum is as follows:

  • Instructor name

  • Student name

  • Subject: Expected Process References

  • Reference information for at least three recent scholarly sources (i.e., published within the last five years through academic presses and/or otherwise peer-reviewed) with potential to be used in the upcoming process analysis paper (noted on the syllabus and course calendar)

  • Brief notes for each source explaining why they are expected to be used

A sample memorandum is attached as a PDF document, below.

Please send the email, with the attached memorandum, to geoffrey.b.elliott@gmail.com on or before the scheduled start of class time of the date indicated on the course calendar. Failure to follow stated submission guidelines will result in the submitted assignment being discarded.

The assignment will be graded based on 1) adherence to standard formatting, 2) completeness and accuracy of information, and 3) adherence to the conventions of edited academic American English as discussed in the current edition of the MLA style guides. (Please see the Purdue University Online Writing Lab for more information regarding those standards, here; be sure to follow MLA rules.) Each category will be assigned a grade, A+ through 0, and the average of those category grades will be recorded as the total assignment grade.

Students are reminded that appropriate citation must be provided for any externally referenced information, and all included information must be justified. That is, any time external information is included, there must be a reason, expressed along with that information, for its inclusion. Such materials must also be appropriately integrated into the student's writing. Acceptable standards for doing so appear on the Purdue University Online Writing Lab, here; be sure to follow MLA rules. FAILURE TO ACCOUNT FOR SOURCES IS PLAGIARISM AND WILL BE DEALT WITH HARSHLY.
