ENG 202, Major Assignment 6: Proposal Presentation

Following the submission of the written proposal, students in ENG 202 will need to produce and perform a presentation of the materials in the proposal. This will generally follow the model presented in the course textbook and corresponds to the extemporaneous speech expected of students in HUM 110.

Students will prepare a five-minute presentation, designed as though to be given to Ben Egan and the board of directors of Awesome Investment Company, in which they make a summary argument in favor of their proposals. They will also need to be ready to answer questions about their proposals. They will additionally be required to evaluate (thoroughly and appropriately) the presentations of at least five of their fellow students, using a form provided by the instructor.

Grades on the assignment will be determined based upon 1) speech mechanics (clarity of speech; variety of pitch, speed, and tone of voice; minimization of vocalized and silent pauses; eye contact with audience members; appropriate use of various presentation aids; etc.), 2) clarity of presentation (central claim made clear, sufficient appropriate evidence acceptably employed, sectional divisions made clear, cliché and trite statements generally avoided, etc.), 3) demonstrated ability to successfully and appropriately respond to audience questions, and 4) appropriateness and thoroughness of evaluations of other students. Each category will be assigned a letter grade, A+ through 0, and the average of those categorical grades will be taken as the total assignment grade.
