What I'm up to, related to teaching, but not in my classroom . . .

Brief bio

I was born in and mostly attended school in Fayetteville, Arkansas.  I graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1981, and the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville in 1986. Because of a childhood fascination with archeology, in college I majored in Anthropology.  After college, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, but eventually decided to pursue my other main interest, biology, by becoming a high school teacher.  I received an M.A.T. in Biology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1989.  My first teaching job was as a middle school science teacher in Durham, North Carolina (1990 until 1993).  Many of my students were children of scientists from the Research Triangle, or the universities in the area.  This made for a diverse and challenging student body.  In 1993-1994 I taught 8th grade Earth Science at Escuela Americana of San Salvador, El Salvador.  The majority of students were Salvadoran, but classes were conducted in English.  In 1994, I returned home to Arkansas, and worked for the next three years as a museum educator at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in Springdale, Arkansas.  In 1997, I returned to classroom teaching as a physics teacher at Fayetteville High School, where I taught "high school" and Advanced Placement Physics.  I was married to Eden Price in 1998.  We have two girls, Zoe, born in 2000, and Ana, born in 2002.  From 2003-2006, we lived in Providence, Rhode Island, where I taught physics in a public school in nearby Cranston, Rhode Island.  From 2006-2008, we lived in Bangkok, Thailand, where I taught physics at Ruamrudee International School and Eden taught landscape architecture at Chulalongkorn University.  In 2005 I earned National Board Certification in Adolescent/Young Adult Science.
