ARCH 280

What is covered in ARCH 280...

As with the ENGT 280 class, this class is a continuation of the ENGT 170 course. The class is designed to give the student an introduction to the AECOsim Building Designer software program. This program is similar to the Bentley Architecture program.

AECOsim Building Designer is considered a BIM (Building Information Modeling) program and has similar capabilities as Autodesk Revit Architecture. This software is taught using the tutorial approach with demonstrations of different tools and techniques. The student will use course handouts and tutorials contained within the Bentley LEARNserver website.

Prior to beginning the architecture portion of the class, students will "warm-up" with 3D drawings of mechanical parts. Many of the commands learned while completing the mechanical parts are useful in the use of the AECOsim Building Designer program. After the completion of these projects, student will continue with the commercial architectural project.

The commercial project will be a four-story office building. The student will complete a 3-dimensional BIM model of the structure as well a a number of 2D sheet views. These views will include: Floor Plans, Elevations, Sections, Interior Elevations, Perspective Views, Structural Details, and Schedules. An example of the project as well as support files are available on the ARCH 280 Course Description & Documents page.

During the course students will learn the following topics:

    • File Organization

    • BIM Workflow

    • Floor Manger

    • Creating a Structural Grid

    • Placing Structural Members

    • Creation, Placement, and Modification of Walls

    • Creation of Spaces, Stairs & Railings, Floors, Ceilings, Slabs, Columns, and Roofs

    • Dimensioning the BIM Model

    • Placement of Doors, Windows, Casework, and Plumbing Fixtures

  • Creating 2D Sheets & Drawings from the BIM Model

    • Generating Various Schedules

    • Printing and E-File Distribution

Good luck and I hope that you will enjoy the class!
