2011 Daily Schedule

The work week runs from Monday through Saturday. Sundays are for individual activities.

Each work day will usually follow this pattern:

  • 7:00 - 8:30 AM: A "working" breakfast discussion of a particular video, topic or reading on ethnobiological ethics or research methods.
  • 8:30 - 9:00 AM: Team coordination
  • 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM: Field activities, presentations or discussions on topics, and team meeting opportunities.
  • 6:00 - 700 PM:Dinner
  • 7:00 - 9:00 PM: A fireside chat with an expert in culture, science or both.

Weather and resources will create opportunities and limitations that will change the general schedule. However, we will all do our best to work together to meet all of the Field School objectives.

A Few Notes on Team-Conducted, Problem-Oriented Activities

The primary activities of the Field School center on specific problems. A problem starts with a very brief statement of a situation. Generally, these problem situations involve carrying out measurements at field sites, analysis of data, preparation of reports and discussions with members of the community.

All of the activities are done as part of a small team. One person is designated as the team leader. It is the responsibility of this leader to coordinate all of the team activities.

The team is not given specific directions on how the problem is to be solved. That's part of the team's responsibility.

Generally, the team is taken to the field site for a short familiarization and problem discussion. The team will then have a period of time to formulate a work strategy, including a timeline for the completion of the study. This strategy is presented to the Field School staff for approval. The team will then have a defined period of time to return to the field site to collect the needed data.

Field School staff will be available throughout this process. There will also be other resources, such as tutorials on measurement and analysis techniques, ancillary data and relevant literature. It is the team, however, that takes the initiative to organize to make the best use of its time and the resources.

The majority of each work day will be organized around the team activities.
