MAPRUNS

MapRun is an app for mobile phones. It times you around a previously set up route. The clock starts as you cross the start line, beeps at any checkpoints you run past (turns or turn around points) then stops the watch when you cross the finish line. Your time is then automatically uploaded to an overall set of results. You can do the route at any time and as many times as you like and each time you try it your time is added to the overall set of results.  Run by yourself or in a pair or group.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE GOOD WITH MAPS TO USE MAPRUN
It is also now possible to use the maprun app using your Garmin watch only - so no need to take your phone on the route with you - however it is probably a good idea to become familiar with the phone app before moving onto using it with your Garmin watch.

To get the most up to date version of the 'app' for your phone just search in the app store for maprun6 (no gap between words and number). Later, once you've got used to the MapRun procedure on your phone, you want to get the app to work on your Garmin watch (FR230 and above)  just download using  Garmin Connect IQ.

There are hundreds of MapRuns to do all over the country. We have 20 or so locally - many in and around the Forest of Dean. The ones you might use for training locally are:

For most of the routes you do not need to be good with maps - the exceptions are the Piercefield Park routes and possibly the Chepstow 3 Woods and Rising Sun score events.

Here are some DIY (and quickly cobbled together) videos that explain a bit more about the app to beginners.  There are 3:
1/ Intro to MapRun
2/ Getting the app on your phone   (please note that the video refers to the previous maprunF.... instead search for maprun6.
3/ Using the app on a route

This is what the map for Mathern and Boughsprings will look like on your phone when you have downloaded them.
