Tom Henry SS

2001-2002 Camaros created by GMMG for Tom Henry Chevrolet, special thanks to Che Earwood & Doug Jahn for all of their help and photos!

Background

Tom Henry Chevrolet of Bakerstown, PA had GMMG customize 2001 and 2002 Camaros for their "Tom Henry Racing" line of upfitted cars. The Tom Henry Racing Camaro SSes were actually the first cars created under this new line of business by Tom Henry Chevrolet. They later went on to offer other modified vehicles, including 5th and 6th gen Camaros, but I'll only be talking about the 4th gens here.

Update from January 2021: You can see/read a little history on Tom Henry Chevrolet here via Scott Settlemire (he is Tom's cousin). Note: the physical dealership (that these 2001 and 2002 Tom Henry SS Camaros were sold out of) was torn down in 2012 and replaced with a new one behind it, however on December 21, 2020, Tom Henry Chevrolet was sold after almost 63 years of operation and became Jim Shorkey Chevrolet. You can watch Tom talk about this decision on the THR YouTube and Facebook.

Production

A total of 32 were built. Three cars were 2001 models and twenty-nine were 2002 models.

Tom Henry SSes could be had with a manual or automatic transmission. The manual cars came with 380hp/400tq while the automatic cars came with 360hp/380tq. Cars could be later upgraded by GMMG to engine packages such as phase II, which would increase manual cars to 435hp/410tq.

29 of the cars came with manual transmissions, while 3 came with automatics.

Cars could be had as a coupe, a coupe with t-tops, or a convertible. There were 9 coupes made (5 of those coupes were RPO B4C with manual transmissions, which are not "real" SSes), 17 coupes with t-tops, and 6 convertibles.

Cars could be had in any factory color, but one of the Onyx Black cars was repainted Hugger Orange as part of its order.

Which Car Will Be The Most Collectible? (Site owner's opinion)

I believe the #03 Mystic Teal car will be the most valuable as a collectible. Mystic Teal was not a color available on an SS under normal circumstances, making this car one of only two real '98-'02 Camaro SSes in this already low production color. Without proof that this car was outfitted as a real SS, however, I cannot say that it IS a real SS. If it is not a real SS with RPO code WU8, it is still the only Tom Henry SS in this uncommon color. I would need to see the RPO sticker for this car or the VIN number.

Second in line would be the #28 Hugger Orange car because of its unique options and popular color.

Third might be the #22 Monterey Maroon car because this color was not available from GM as an SS. It's a fairly uncommon color overall, and this might be the only near-official SS in this color. This car has had a few modifications done to it that GMMG did not supply, but could likely be turned back to original.

The B4C cars' values may be higher or lower than the value of other Tom Henry SSes. You could not order a B4C with WU8 or vice-versa, therefore these cars were not originally SSes before the conversion. They were B4Cs, which are essentially Z28s with a few different parts.

Feature Car

The feature car for the Tom Henry SS section is #02 owned by Che Earwood of Plano, IL. Thanks to the wonderful images he sent me, I will be showing off the GMMG modifications specific to the Tom Henry SSes using his car primarily.

Since Che's car was upgraded from the base level package to a GMMG phase II (435hp), I will be using pictures of #22 (photos by ebay seller tatumautogroup) and #26 (photos by ebay seller grabiak000) for the pictures of elements specific to the phase I (380hp) package as well as various other modifications.

[Items in brackets are items I need help with or proof of]

[All Tom Henry SSes will have a GMMG stamped date on the front of the passenger side head] and a GMMG build sheet. The engine stamp is done on the date the car is completed. [This stamping may only be done on cars with engine modifications further than phase 1].

Each car came with these 23 standard modifications:

1. Phase I, 380hp/400tq Package if manual transmission equipped, 360hp/380tq Package is automatic equipped (will be discussed and outlined in a separate GMMG section)

2. Cat Back Chambered Exhaust

Video

Doug was nice enough to provide me a video of #28 idling and revving. If you don't have a subwoofer for your computer speakers, go buy a 2.1 system now! This car sounds great and you won't hear the rumble without a sub! This Tom Henry SS is in Phase 2X6 form.
