Running Gear

Although badly rusted, most of the mechanical gear was fairly solid. At this point I have not figured out the best way to renovate the threads wheel studs. One or two of them look too badly corroded to run a die down them.

The rear axle plates had already had ball bearing races welded to them so these were as good as scrap but I had plans to replace these with new bearing assemblies anyway. I know this goes away from the original equipment but I think it will be much more robust and smoother to run. Anyway, I intend to fit them so that I can revert back to the original configuration at any time.

I fabricated a new hinge plate for the brake linkage which was then spot welded this to the underside of the new seat after trail alignment of the complete mechanism.

One of the two new rear axle ball bearing assemblies test fitted for alignment. The 5/8" axle is locked in place using two grub screws in the bearing collet.

Note the three holes which are retained to allow the original axle plates to be refitted if required. These will be filled with body filled but can easily be drilled back out later.

More to come.......
