ATLANTIC "TYPE" DESIGNS BUILT 1934-1938

OVER A PERIOD OF ABOUT FIVE YEARS THREE RAILROADS BUILT 29 FOUR-COUPLED STEAM LOCOMOTIVES TO POWER LIGHT WEIGHT TRAINS. ONLY ONE OF THE DESIGNS WAS A TRUE ATLANTIC; THE OTHERS HAD A FOUR WHEEL TRAILING TRUCK BUT WERE ATLANTICS IN SPIRIT.

"LADY BALTIMORE"

In September 1934 the Baltimore & Ohio's Mt. Clare Shop in Baltimore built a 4-4-4 to power "The Abe Lincoln" between Chicago and St. Louis. The 84" drivers were for speed and the large boiler operating at an exceptional 350 lbs. psi with a water-tube firebox was built to provide the horsepower to sustain high speeds. Tractive force was 37,000 lbs. with booster operating.

"HIAWATHAS"

In 1935 the Milwaukee Road had ALCO build two Atlantics of exceptional speed and power for their streamlined "Hiawatha" trains. They were followed by another in 1936 and 1937. The "Hiawatha" was scheduled to cover the 410 miles between Chicago and St. Paul in 390 minutes.

CANADIAN PACIFIC "JUBILEE" 4-4-4's

To power light weight trains between Montreal and Quebec and Calgary and Edmenton the Canadian Pacific had the Montreal Locomotive Works build in 1936 four F2A 4-4-4 "Jubilee" locomotives driven on the first of their 80" drivers. In 1936 and 1937, twenty additional 4-4-4 engines designated F1A were built by the Canadian Locomotive Company but driven on the rear drivers which were reduced to 75".
