BUILT 1895-1901

Baldwin built the first Atlantic in 1895 for the Atlantic Coast Line. The trailing axle provided space for a deeper firebox and a larger boiler which produced more steam than the 4-4-0 type could offer. The ample steam supply provided the horsepower that made the Atlantic a fast locomotive. The trailing axle was rigid on early 4-4-2's since the wheel-base was similar to that of a 4-6-0 and could take curves without the need for a swiveling truck. Lateral movement was provided after the pioneer designs and many later Atlantics had trailing trucks.

NEW YORK, PROVIDENCE & BOSTON 40 WAS BUILT BY THE RHODE ISLAND LOCOMOTIVE WORKS IN 1887 AS A 4-4-0.

The trailing wheels were added to spread weight and were removed in 1894. The wheels were not to provide a more efficient firebox and Number 40 is not considered to be an Atlantic or the first of the type despite the wheel arrangement.

IN 1895 THE MISSOURI KANSAS TEXAS PROVIDED BALDWIN WITH ITS SECOND ORDER FOR AN ATLANTIC TYPE.

Number 203 was very similar to the ACL 4-4-2's but had somewhat different specifications.
