Syllabus

  • Course: Math 10B (course catalog)
  • Title: Calculus II
  • Credit Hours: 4
  • Prerequisite: AP Calculus AB score of 3, 4, or 5 (or equivalent AB subscore on BC exam), or Math 10A, or Math 20A. (No credit given if taken after or concurrent with Math 20B.)
  • Catalog Description: Integral calculus of functions of one variable, with applications. Antiderivatives, definite integrals, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, methods of integration, areas and volumes, separable differential equations.
  • Textbook: Calculus, 6th edition, by Deborah Hughes-Hallett, et. al.; published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 2013.
    • The bookstore has several textbook options available. Calculus: Single & Multivariable covers the material in 10A, 10B, and 10C. For students who will not take 10C, Calculus: Single Variable is less expensive and covers 10A and 10B. For each of these texts, there is a looseleaf option available. Any of these options will suffice for this course.
    • The publisher has a companion site for the textbook.
  • Subject Material: We will cover parts of chapters 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 in the text.
  • Electronic Computing Devices: Calculators and computer programs (such as WolframAlpha) can be very helpful while working on homework assignments. However, these devices will not be allowed during quizzes or exams.
  • Lecture: Attending lecture is a fundamental part of the course; you are responsible for material presented in lecture whether or not it is discussed in the textbook.
  • Reading: Reading the sections of the textbook corresponding to the assigned homework exercises is considered part of the homework assignment; you are responsible for the material in these sections whether or not it is discussed in lecture.
  • Homework: Homework is a very important part of the course and, in order to fully master the topics, it is essential that you work carefully on each assignment and try your best to complete every problem. You are encouraged to ask for help on your homework at section, during office hours, on Piazza, or in the Calculus Tutoring Lab. A Student Solutions Manual (available in the bookstore) has complete solutions to all odd-numbered-exercises. Although homework will not be collected nor graded, your understanding of the assignments will be checked by quizzes.
  • Quizzes: On 4 occasions during the quarter, lecture will end (or maybe begin) with a short 15-minute quiz. See the course calendar for the specific dates. Each quiz will consist of 2 problems from recent homework assignments. You will not be allowed any notes or calculators during these quizzes. Your quiz grade will be the average of your best 3 quiz scores. There will be no makeup quizzes.
  • Asking Questions: There are a couple different ways you can ask questions about material in the course.
    • This term we'll use Piazza, an online system for class discussion. Instead of emailing questions to me or the TA, you should consider posting your question on Piazza.
    • You can your TA questions during section.
    • Finally, you can always come and ask questions during office hours.
  • Exams: There will be two midterms and one final exam. See the calendar for specific dates.
    • It is your responsibility to make sure you do not have a conflict with the final exam. If you cannot take the final exam at the specified time, do not enroll in this course. You must pass the final exam in order to pass the course.
    • There are no makeup exams, nor are there alternate exam times. (If you have a documented disability or must miss the exam for a university-sponsored activity, arrangements can be made using the standard procedures.)
    • You may bring ONE 8.5 by 11 inch sheet of notes to each exam. You may use both sides of this sheet, and your notes must be handwritten. (No photocopies!)
    • Please bring a blue book.
    • There will be no makeup exams.
  • Regrades: All graded material will be returned in discussion sections. If you wish to have your quiz or exam regraded, you must return it to your TA before leaving section. If you do not retrieve your quiz or exam during section, you must pick it up during your TA's office hours (and, again, return it before leaving the room) in the next week in order to ask for a regrade. You should keep all your quizzes and exams so that we can ensure there are no mistakes in entering your scores.
  • Final Score: Your final score in the course will be the higher of these two weighted averages. Please note that there are only four factors, and no other factors (such as scholarship or graduation requirements) will be considered.
    • 20% quizzes, 20% midterm 1, 20% midterm 2, 40% final exam
    • 20% quizzes, 20% best midterm, 60% final exam
  • Final Grade: If your final score falls in the following ranges, you will be guaranteed that your final grade is no worse than the following letter grade. The scale may be adjusted to be more lenient. There is no curve.
    • 97-100 = A+
    • 93-97 = A
    • 90-93 = A-
    • 87-90 = B+
    • 83-87 = B
    • 80-83 = B-
    • 77-80 = C+
    • 73-77 = C
    • 70-73 = C-
  • Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty is a serious offense. Students caught cheating will face an administrative sanction which may include suspension or expulsion from the university. (Click here for more information.)
