Early Years Clinical Experience

Early Years in Primary Care comprises 12 half-day sessions in both first and second year. It aims to complement the biomedical science that the medical students learn in their first and second year and, most importantly, introduces them to a real life patient volunteer to put this theoretical learning into context.  The aim is to build empathy and develop a person-centered approach to practice.  There are learning objectives based on a clinical topic to work through each session, as well as opportunities to practise clinical skills and prescribing tasks.  Students will develop their research, presentation, teaching and teamwork skills, as well as learning to speak to patients and hear their individual narratives.

Expansion in medical student numbers means that we need to recruit new tutors for Early Years, so please do complete this form to express your interest.

You do not need to have any prior teaching experience or teaching qualifications in order to join our teaching team and you will receive remuneration for your time. All new tutors will be invited to a mandatory training session in September/October 2023 and there will be regular opportunities for feedback and support throughout the placement (please see the handbook below for further details).

"Taking part in Phase 1 Early Years teaching for the first time has been a hugely enjoyable experience. I have absolutely loved getting to know a small group of enthusiastic young people and the continuity and regularity of the sessions has felt really positive. l love teaching! My patients love it too and I can’t wait for next year to do it again." - Tara George, Early Years Tutor, Wingerworth Surgery, Chesterfield
