Holiday Season
Happy holidays OCVES!
A holiday is a special time of celebration.
The word holiday comes from the phrase "holy day".
A public holiday is a day when many businesses (including schools) are closed.
The time between November through January is called the Holiday Season because there are multiple holidays celebrated in North America during this time.
In Canada, our public holidays are:
Christmas Day (December 25th)
Boxing Day (December 26th)
New Years Day (January 1st)
Each holiday, festival, or celebration has different ways of celebrating. These ways of celebrating are called traditions. Some holidays have specific traditions, but these traditions can vary depending on the community or culture.
Many holidays have either a religious or cultural significance, but not all. Non-religious holidays are called secular holidays.
Some families may not celebrate any of the holidays, while others celebrate one.
Some families celebrate multiple holidays.
