Remembrance Day & Veteran's Week

Every year, Canadians across the country observe Remembrance Day on November 11th.
Veteran's Week runs from November 5th until Remembrance Day.
Indigenous Remembrance Day is on November 8th.

Remembrance Day was originally known as Armistice Day, and it was observed on the Monday of the week of November 11th.

It was actually on Monday, November 11th, 1918 at 11:00 AM that the Armistice agreement ended the first world war- it was "the 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month."

In 1931, a Member of Parliament for Comox–Alberni named Alan Neill introduced a bill to change Armistice Day to November 11th. This bill also changed the name to Remembrance Day.

In November, and especially during Remembrance Day & Veteran's Week, we learn about veterans' and Canadian military history, observe moments of silence, and wear the poppy which is the symbol of Remembrance Day.

The Poppy

"The Poppy Campaign" begins the last Friday of October and continues until Remembrance Day. The Royal Canadian Legion, the largest veteran support organization in Canada, sells poppies to raise money to support veteran's and their families. To wear a poppy is to make a visual pledge to never forget those who served and sacrificed.

Operation Remembrance

Operation Remembrance is a Canadian initiative to respect and honour our veterans from coast to coast to coast.
New videos were posted every day for 11 days on the Operation Remembrance Youtube Channel..
