Sikh Heritage Month

April is Sikh Heritage Month! This heritage month is an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the history, culture, and many accomplishments of Sikh Canadians. Sikh Heritage Month has been recognized in Ontario since 2013, and was officially recognized in Canada in 2019.

Sikh Canadians celebrate Vaisakhi/Baisakhi on April 13th or 14th, which marks the creation of the Khalsa and the Sikh articles of faith. This holiday is also celebrated by people of the Hindu faith. (This year it is on April 13th).

Did you know that Canada has one of the largest Sikh populations in the world!? Brampton, Ontario has the largest Sikh population outside of India. You can learn more about Sikhism here. (Links to BBC Kids article.)
