Steps before performing CPR Hands Only

Leading steps before providing CPR to someone

1

First check if the scene is safe. Then tap the person on the shoulders and shout "Are you OK?" to ensure the person needs help

2

Then call 9-1-1. You should point at a person to help call 9-1-1 and then send someone to get a AED. If there is no AED available, or there is no bystander to access it, stay with the victim, and call 9-1-1 immediately and begin assisting the victim.

3

Check to see if the person is breathing and listen carefully for no more than 10 seconds. You may hear gasping sounds but they are not equate to breathing.

4

If you don't hear breathing begin CPR compressions.

5

Push hard and fast. Place your hands, one on top of the other, in the middle of the chest. Then use your body weight to administer compressions that are at least 2 inches deep and deliver at a rate of at least 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
