6th Grade - Galaxies and Aztec Calendar Stones

As our 6th grade students started to explore the topic of Astronomy in Science, we started the artistic astronomical journey by painting a watercolor galaxy. This project was so very well executed by our student artists. We discussed the what the different colors in a galaxy and what they represent. Please take a moment to view the link below from Cornell that further explains the amazing colors of our galaxy and enjoy the in-class photos of this beautiful journey!

Students learning watercolor techniques to achieve the beautiful multi-colored areas of a galaxy. Once complete, we used chalk pastels to produce the airy look of our galaxies and then finished the painting with a splatter technique to create our lovely stars.

AZTEC CALENDAR SUNSTONES

We took a departure from creating true "sun paintings" with solar flares and explored the Aztec Calendar Stone or sometimes referred to as the "Aztec Sunstone". Students gained an appreciation of the design process of creating art with concentric circles and replicating the features of an Aztec God.

Students learned stamping techniques and using their creativity to represent a stone carved surface on paper.

Students watched parts of this video that discussed the symbolism and information held within the intricate design of this amazing piece of ancient ingenuity used by the Aztecs.
