Parents

Welcome to the Parents' Web Page!

I thank you for the opportunity to serve your child in the TEK library.

In addition to physical books, we have several sites that allow students to read books online. They are on the TEK main web page on the bottom under Media Center.

Help your child

Please help your child return books on time. We do not charge for overdue books in elementary school, but books must be returned before new ones may be checked out. Also, it is the responsibility of each student to take good care of the books that he/she has checked out. Occasionally books do get lost or damaged and must be paid for. This must be done before new books are checked out. If a student has a book checked out from a prior school, they may only check out one book until the obligation to the other school is taken care of. Lost/damaged book fees remain with the student even if they transfer to another school within the district.

Suggested comprehension strategies:

  • Show the cover and title of the story - predict what the story will be about based on the title/illustration

  • Ask "What do you already know about ...? Ask who, what, where, when, and why questions. Examples: "What do you think ___ meant when they said...?" "Why do you think ___ realized that ...?"

  • Make connections to your life. Examples: What would you have done? Who would you want to be friends with? Why?

  • Point out interesting things about the illustrations

  • What has happened in the story so far? (summarize)

  • Have your child tell the story in their own words.

  • Ask your child to describe an event from the story.

  • Ask for examples of how someone showed they were happy, sad, angry, etc.

  • Have your child think of some questions to ask the character in the story. Another idea - what questions do you have for the author?

  • Have your child share an opinion about the story.
