Mission

The mission of gifted education is to maximize the potential of gifted and talented learners by providing programs and services which match their unique characteristics and needs.

  • The gifted have a right to an appropriate education grounded in the recognition of individual differences and unique learning needs.
  • The gifted need a curriculum responsive to their individual learning rate, style, and complexity. The gifted learn best in an instructional environment that encourages and nurtures inquiry, flexibility, and critical and creative thinking.

How Do I Qualify for Challenge?

Greenville County uses state-mandated criteria for identifying students for the gifted program.

Criteria for Qualification:

96% or higher national age composite percentile rank score on aptitude testing (OLSAT, COGAT) automatic qualification.

OR must meet 2 of the 3 Dimensions

Dimension A: Reasoning Abilities: 93% or higher national age % score (OLSAT, COGAT)

Dimension B: Academic Achievement: MAP-94th or higher national percentile score in Reading or Math. IOWA or ITBS- 94th or higher in Reading Comprehension or (Grade 2) Total Math/ (Grade 3) Problem Solving/Data Interpretation.

Dimension C: Intellectual/Academic Performance: Performance Task Test

    • Classroom grades are not used in elementary school to qualify.
    • Only students who are partially qualified (have a qualifying score in one dimension) will be re-tested.
    • Students from another state who have participated in G/T classes must meet the state G/T criteria for South Carolina.
    • Results of private testing will not be accepted for placing students in the Challenge program.
