JROTC Requirements

JROTC is a special course--different than every other course offered at Southside High School. Among other requirements, students must wear their uniform once per week and meet special appearance requirements while wearing the uniform or on JROTC field trips. Students who successfully meet these requirements and expectations are typically the students best prepared for the responsibilities that come after high school.

JROTC Grading and Assessments

Grades are calculated each nine weeks using the following criteria:

40% Uniform Wear/Personal Appearance

30% Physical Fitness

20% Academic/Drill Tests

10% Quizzes/Drill Assessments

Attendance

To receive credit for a course, students must not miss more than ten (10) days for a year, unless approved by Southside High Principal. See the Southside High Student Handbook for details.

Homework/Test Make-up

Homework/projects are assigned during the first class period after the missed day. Quizzes/tests are given during the first class period after the missed day. Make-up work must be turned in at the discretion of the instructor; time frame allowed is determined by when the student knew about requirements. Grades can only be made up within the current 9 week period.

Uniform Day Make-up

Unless specifically stated by an instructor, ALL missed uniform grades must be made up; however, whether excused or unexcused, uniform grades can only be made up during the same 9-week period in which they were originally missed. If you are unsure of what uniform to wear for make-up, the default uniform is tie/tie-tab and lightweight jacket.

    1. Cadets absent on uniform day may earn full credit (maximum 100) if the uniform of the week is worn within the first two days back to school. Otherwise, 10 points will be deducted for each day not worn.

    2. Cadets who do not wear the uniform by the fourth day back from an absence will receive a 0.

    3. When a cadet is present, but not wearing a uniform, their grade will be 0. See cadet handbook chapter 4, paragraph 4.1.

    4. Unless approved by the SASI, cadets who receive one or more uniform grades of 0 may only make up one grade within the current 9 weeks and the maximum make-up grade is 80.

Academic and Behavioral Expectations

See Chapter 5 in the AFJROTC Cadet Handbook. Cadets violating class and school rules will be verbally reprimanded on first occurrence. Subsequent violations will result in a JROTC written counseling session with a JROTC instructor. A call will be made to the parents describing the violation and action taken. Depending on the severity of the violation, counseling with an assistant principal may also be required.

Withdrawal from JROTC:

While we want all students who enroll in AFJROTC to successfully complete the program, there may be occasions where students may be removed from JROTC for the good of the overall program or the students enrolled in the program.

The Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI), Lt. Colonel Dibert, may dis-enroll a student from the AFJROTC program for any one of the following reasons:

      • Failure to maintain acceptable standards

      • Unwillingness to train (for example, refusal to cut hair, refusal to wear the uniform and/or dress out for physical training activities)

      • Discipline reasons (Per AFJROTC 36-2010, “While AFJROTC instills self-discipline, it is not to be used as a remedy for chronic student disciplinary problems.”) or

      • Any other reason deemed appropriate by the SASI, in coordination with the Southside High School Principal.
