Honors

We are pleased to announce that Southside AFJROTC Honors courses will be offered for third and fourth year cadets meeting enrollment criteria.

AFJROTC III and AFJROTC IV are the honors level equivalent counterparts to their respective AFJROTC 3 and AFJROTC 4 courses. As such, cadets enrolled in these honors courses should refer to the respective AFJROTC 3 or AFJROTC 4 course syllabi as well as this syllabus.

Prerequisites: These honors courses are offered by the SASI to cadets who have normally been in the program for at least two years or JROTC at Southside High School, have already demonstrated the potential to serve in top (command staff) cadet leadership positions and maintained strong academic performance in JROTC (minimum 3.5 GPA) and other course work (minimum overall 3.0 GPA).

Coursework: In addition to the assignments given to their AFJROTC 3 and AFJROTC 4 counterparts, AFJROTC II/IV cadets will complete the following honors level assignments:

  • Aerospace Science: Cadets will be assigned a major research paper or project with a written report and formal presentation to a panel of faculty/community team members. The project may be a research paper, scientific analysis or a major project associated with their AFJROTC unit with a written summary and personal reflection. They will receive three major grades for the presentation (one for content, one for delivery, and one for production)as well as minor progress grades incrementally awarded during the course of the semester

  • Leadership Education: Cadets will maintain a Daily Journal in a Google Doc (or similar) shared with their JROTC instructors.. Cadets will record a summary of their corps activities, research paper or project progress each day in their journals. The SASI will review and grade the journal each Friday (or the last day of the school week) for a weekly minor grade. A quarterly major grade will also be given based on overall performance, content, creativity, and improvement.

Retention: Cadets assigned to JROTC Honors will be held to the absolute highest standards of academic and behavioral performance. If a cadet is removed from their leadership position due to poor performance (or for disciplinary reasons) they will also be disenrolled from this honors course and assigned to the respective AFJROTC 3 or AFJROTC 4 course.

Parents and students with questions should contact Lt Col Dibert.
