Tips for Parents

Dear Parents,

Grades can be accessed through the parent portal; if you have a question or concern, please contact me. If your student is absent, it is his or her job to get the assignments from our class class file box. Full assignments will always be listed in the classroom.

I give the students their guided notes guide on the FIRST day we start a new unit. This way you both can see what is expected for the test, and your student can even begin preparing the first day of a new unit.

Parents and Social Studies:

Often times, Social studies encompasses a lot of different topics and Students need reading, writing, scientific, and mathematical skills to succeed in Social studies. If you find your student having difficulties in my classroom, here are my suggestions:

1. Make sure your student is writing in his or her agenda due dates, assignments and test dates.

2. Make sure your student is taking notes and they are all together in the social studies section of his or her binder. (Organization is the key!!!)

3. Does your student know all the key terms? Make flash cards. If students are aware of the actual words, they have a better chance at discussing and applying it to different situations.

4. Have your students explain their notes, or their projects to you. If they can tell you in their own words why we did a project or what it means, then they understand it!!!!

5. We can often talk about a lot of topics in social studies. If there is a subject that interests them encourage them to read more. If there is a topic that relates to a current event, share your opinion with them, allow them to figure out what they believe. Often times its much more fun if they hear it from more sources than just their teacher!!

6. Help them prepare for tests and make sure they have all their class and homework has been turned in. More than half of what is needed to succeed is effort!!
