Services
All services provided are within in the academic, career, and emotional/social domains.
The services we provide for students at Northwest include:
Individual counseling services:
The individual counseling provided is short-term and solution-focused. As school counselors it is our duty to provide this service to students who have issues that can interfere with their academic, career, and emotional/social development. While students need to be in class, these emotional concerns need to be confronted so that the students can be as effective as possible.
Group counseling services:
Groups will be formed if a number of students are experiencing similar issues (i.e. divorce, drama, anxiety, etc.). Group counseling is known to be highly effective. Adults can only do so much to influence students. Knowing that peers are experiencing similar conflicts normalizes students’ experiences. When students help each other, solutions are met much more quickly and effectively.
Classroom guidance lessons:
School counselors enter classrooms on a monthly basis provide classroom lessons involving our theme for the month. Themes may include diversity, bullying, career exploration, etc. These lessons call for high student involvement and discussion.
Individual planning:
In 8th grade, students will create what is called an individual graduation plan (IGP). This is basically the plan for their coursework over their next four years at high school. Coursework will be chosen by their cluster and major of choice. To help choose their cluster and major, students will take various assessments to determine their career interests.
Other services include:
Consultation with parents:
Parents can make appointments with counselors, as needed.
Collaboration with community agencies:
School counselors serve as liaisons between schools and community agencies. Community non-profit organizations and businesses are a vital part of providing students at Northwest with any necessities, when needed. Local businesses can also help students explore career options.
