What is an Instructional Coach?

I get asked a lot' "What DO you do?"

I want to start off by sharing my goals as an IC. It is to teach, encourage, motivate, support and inspire the teachers here at Armstrong Elementary School by mentoring and guiding the teachers through effective planning, and implementation of the standards by using best practices to increase our students' achievement.


My Role

1. The instructional coach provides support for teacher by planning, organizing and mentoring to facilitate change to improve the instructional program.

2, The instructional coach study and analyze the data from tests (standardized tests and classroom assessments)to determine our strengths and areas in which we have an opportunity to improve our instruction.

3. The instructional coach focuses on providing knowledge of state standards and best practices in education and sharing those with the teachers so they can meet the needs of their students.

4. The instructional coach develops the professional development calendar for the school that is based on the schools goals and improvement plan.

5. The instructional coach works with the school's leadership team and the teachers to organize grade level, vertical and data teams within the school.

6. The instructional coach works with classroom teachers during in and out coaching and modeling lessons in order to help teachers hone the craft of teaching.

7. The instructional coach promotes and helps the school implement district initiatives.

8. The instructional coach performs other duties related to student achievement as determined by the school's leadership.
