Hands On Activities

(Feel free to choose one Or Both)

Construction: Provide different types of materials from home, such as, boxes, cans, containers, etc. You and your child can create something together.

Writing: Have students practice pre-writing skills.  Begin with horizontal/vertical lines, then progress to O and +.  If that goes well try square, rectangle, and triangle.  Once you have pre-writing, move on to the letters in their name.

Concepts of Print

Breakfast: Point out the colorful letters on the front of a cereal box, carton of milk, and etc.

Getting dressed or folding the laundry: If your child has clothing with print on it, read the print while tracking the words with your finger.

Bath time: On the shampoo or bubble bath bottle, find a word that begins with the same letter as your child’s name. Eg, “The word is soft. Soft begins with S, just like your name, Sofia.

During play activities: Point out the words on the toy containers then ask your child to guess what they say or identify any letters.

HouseHold Help

Here are some ways you can involve and empower your child in your homes

Laundry: Allow your child to help sort items.  Sort by type (socks, etc.), color, etc.

Cleaning up: Have your child to help with picking up their toys.  Have them count items, sort items, identify items as they are put away.

Let’s Eat!

Food preparation: Allow your child to help you wash fruits and vegetables that you will need for cooking. If you are adventurous, allow them to cut the vegetables and talk about the sizes, texture, amounts, lengths after you cut it.

Cooking: Depending on the food you are preparing, you may let your child stir the food and talk about the changes that the food has undergone after it was mixed with other ingredients. While cooking you can engage your child in measuring the ingredients as well.

INVESTIGATING  OUTDOORS

Your yard or other outside area: Talk about the grass, trees, look for blooming flowers. Build on directional vocabulary such as what is to our left, right, etc. Explore the different surfaces you have access to--grass, dirt, concrete, asphalt. See if your child can use vocabulary to describe. For example, the grass is soft and the concrete is hard.

INVESTIGATING WATER

Bath time: Explore how water impacts other substances like soap. You can experiment by putting soap on your child without water and talk about how it feels like. Add water then observe what happens to the soap on the body and bath toys.

INVESTIGATING DIFFERENT SOUNDS

Make music: Provide different materials that children can tap and explore to create different sounds. For example, pots, wooden bowls, glass (tap gently), metal and plastic utensils, etc. This will be an opportunity for children to learn that different sounds come from different materials, create different rhythms, and that the intensity of tapping the materials changes the volume of the sound.

Free Play

Enjoy free play with your child!  Let your child choose an activity, build with blocks, dress up, color, etc. Have fun talking and bonding with your child!

Arts and crafts

Self-portrait: If you have photos of your child available, let them draw directly on the photo.  Identify facial features while you draw.  Move to paper alone and start with your head and progress through facial features.

Body tracing: If you have large enough paper, have your child, if willing, lie down and you trace their body.  Then have your child color, decorate, etc.

Motor Activities

Give yoga a try! We use Cosmic Kids Yoga in class.  The kids love it and she has lots of videos from pirates to mermaids!
