Practicing

Strings students are encouraged to practice at least 10-15 minutes daily to reinforce the concepts learned in class and build muscle memory of notes. If students are unable to find time to practice at home or do not have an instrument at home, they may come to the Orchestra room for Morning Practice drop-in time from 7:55-8:25 every morning. During this time, students may practice individually or with peers and receive extra assistance from Ms. Lowe.

Here are some tips & strategies for practicing:

1. Tune your instrument daily before each time you play. A drone tuner can be found here. A tuner which reads pitches and tells you if notes are in or out of tune can be found here. (Or use an app on your phone!)

*Beginning students - please don't try to tune your instrument at home. I will tune all the instruments in class until you learn how to tune in December.

2. Use a metronome to help you keep a steady beat while you practice.

3. Practice in small sections and try to play those sections at least 5 times in a row correctly.

4. Pay close attention to your posture & position. Check your left hand shape, bow hold and body posture.

5. Take a selfie video while playing and then watch it and listen for elements of the music to improve.

6. Perform for parents, family members, and family pets. :)

7. Don't get frustrated! If you're having difficulties, practice more slowly and try to make a beautiful sound. You'll get there - be patient!
