French 1
Major Assignments and Projects (tentative):
Presentational: Students will introduce themselves and carry on a short, unscripted dialogue. Students will describe themselves and others around them.
Interpretive: Students will demonstrate understanding by responding to comments or questions made in class regarding descriptions, responses, performing tasks, and other activities conducted in class.
Interpersonal: The students will engage in conversations and dialogues with partners in the target language. The students will ask their partners or other classmates’ questions and respond in French regarding the lesson or concepts we are studying.
Assessment and Grading Policy: The district policy will be observed in calculating grades. Major assessments account for 60% of a student’s grades and minor assessments account for 40%. In addition to traditional assessments, performance-based assessments using the three modes of communication (presentational, interpersonal, and interpretive) will be used.
Classroom Expectations and Consequences:
Students should be on time to class.
Students should be prepared to learn, bringing all necessary materials to class (e.g. paper, writing tools, folder, etc.).
Students should be respectful of others, listen attentively, and participate in all activities.
Students should make up missed work in a timely manner.
Students not adhering to classroom rules and expectations will confer with me. Further steps involve a call to a parent, a meeting with parent and/or administator, and finally, a referral may be given.
Cell phones: Students are expected to keep cell phones turned off and stored out of sight while they are in the school building. Cell phones that are seen or heard will not be taken; a consequence will be given.
Students are expected to be honest and demonstrate the solid character that represents our school and our community.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A SUCCESSFUL LANGUAGE EXPERIENCE
Expect the Best from me and your peers! Be open to learning a new language and realize that grammar and pronunciation will be different.
Be in class. A foreign language is very difficult to learn on your own.
Participate! Be in class and participate in all classroom activities
Ask for help if you do not understand – don’t wait until it is too late!
Stay Focused! Do your best on all assignments – practice does make perfect!
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes! Speak French at every opportunity. Mistakes are normal and help you to learn. Your goal is to be able to communicate in the target language, not to be perfect.
Bienvenue! and Welcome to French 1!
