ELA Overview

Please find below details about expectations for English students, extra help, and grading.

Classroom Rules and Expectations:

  • Above all, have fun and enjoy the learning environment that we will create together!

  • Show respect by respecting yourself, your classmates and your teacher. Also offer respect for your surroundings. Your classroom is equipped for you – treat it accordingly!

  • Be prepared by coming to class with all required supplies; binders, texts and any special supplies required for the day’s class.

  • Students are required to complete all work and assignments on time. This ensures you are ready to move on to the next learning outcome.

  • Exhibit appropriate behaviour with a positive attitude, appropriate language, and appropriate dress. In situations where you engage in troublesome behaviour accept responsibility for your individual behaviour and make a plan to change it!

Expectations for Learning

Absences: When students return from an absence, it is their responsibility to make up the work they missed. Students need to ALWAYS copy down missed assignments from the assignment board or from one of their classmates. Students should hand in assignments that were due to the appropriate bin.

If students miss:

a) Worksheet/handouts - pick up missed paperwork from the extra copies binder.

b) Notes - borrow and copy it from one of their classmates on their own time.

c) A TEST - students will arrange a time with me to make up the test. Make up tests may happen during class time or on lunch break. If a student knows ahead of time that s/he is going to be absent for an extended period, please give me at least 1 week notice to schedule an appropriate make-up test.

Missed Work/Late Assignments: Students should aim to hand in all assignments complete and on time. If a student believes that they will need extra time to complete their assignment, they should discuss it with me beforehand. If a student does not hand in their assignment on time AND they have not discussed an extension with me prior to the due date, the following will apply:

  1. The student will be asked to stay in at lunch or reccess to complete the assignment. It will be noted as late in PowerSchool.

  2. If it is not handed in the second day after the due date, parents will be contacted to notify that an assignment is missing or incomplete.

  3. If the student requires further instruction or reinforcement in order to complete the assignment, support will be provided.

  4. If it is not handed in on the third day after the assignment is due (with no discussion of valid reasons for an extension), the assignment mark will be recorded as a 0.

*Students and parents please note - incomplete/missing assignments adversely affect students' progress and skills acquisition. This will be reflected on the term report card.

Extra Help

I am happy to provide extra help for students who need it. I ask that students aim to be proactive, and ask for help as soon as they realize they are experiencing difficulties, so that they do not fall too far behind. I would appreciate it if requests for extra help were made one day in advance, but will certainly try to accommodate same day requests for help.
