In 2002, Dr. Linda Scott, former IRMS principal, facilitated the implementation of the AVID program at Indian River Middle School. We became the first and only AVID National Demonstration school in 2004, and we are currently still the only school in Chesapeake that holds this honor.

While we embed AVID methodologies schoolwide, approximately 14% of our student population is enrolled in our AVID program. They engage in an AVID elective class rather than Core Plus where they learn a curriculum that enhances their skills to promote greater student achievement.
