Service projects encourage boys to discover that they have the ability to make positive changes in their communities even at a young age. They can help protect and improve the environment too, giving back to the land they use and enjoy. Service projects shall be meaningful service not normally expected of a Scout as a part of his chartered organization, school, religious, or community activities, the environment, or for needy individuals. Projects involving council property or other BSA activities are not acceptable for a service project. The service project also may not be performed for a business, be of a commercial nature, or be a fund-raiser. Scouts may come up with their own service project ideas or they can contact Committee Member Jen Keegan or (858-945-7554) who keeps a listing of any ideas that come into the troop from the community.
For Star and Life Ranks. A Scout will take part in service projects totaling at least 6 hours of work. This may be done as an individual project or as a member of a patrol or troop project. For Life rank specifically, the Troop 271 tradition is for a Scout to plan and lead an individual service project. This will allow him to gain experience that will prepare him for his Eagle service project. This requires the Scout to work with Troop 271's Life Service Project Advisor, Committee Member Jen Keegan or (858-945-7554). Any project must be approved by Scoutmaster before it is started.
For Eagle Rank. A Scout will plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project. You must use the Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project Workbook in meeting this requirement. The project idea must be approved by Scoutmaster, the Troop Committee Chair, the benefiting organization, and by a San Diego Imperial Council, Torrey Pines District, Eagle Project advisor.
