Chapter 18 - Electrochemistry
Electrochemistry Mini-Lesson
(YouTube Link) - (9mins) A brief overview of electrochemistry in terms of redox reactions, reduction potentials, as well as galvanic and electrolytic cells and the difference between them.
ELECtrochem overview/notes
Another Teacher's AP Chemistry Electrochem Overview/NOTES - this is an electrochem overview a student found and used for this chapter and recommended as being helpful. There is also a SHORT VIDEO linked to the left (and here: YouTube Link) that goes with it about cells and salt bridges.
More Helpful Resources
Animation Link - This site lets you pick metals and solutions and then turn on voltmeter to see if the reaction will run and what the Ecell will be. If you pick a metal that is not in the solution it won't "run" since that electrode would not work. When it's running it shows the flow of electrons and changes to ions nicely.
Ecell Practice Website - Gives a problem at the top and you choose the half reactions from a reduction table below. It will check the equations and the final Ecell for you and has a "tutor" button to give you more information if you get something wrong and need help.
Gibbs Free Energy Concept Builder - all three levels of this are good for this chapter
Electrolysis Simulation Site - This walks you through some ELECTROLYTIC cell basics with a simulation. Our primary focus this chapter is Galvanic Cells but you are also learning about Electrolytic so this may help you.
*** NOTE: Many of the answer scans below say Chp. 17 instead of Chp. 18, I have not had the chance to rescan them just to update the chapter. Don't be confused, Electrochemistry IS Chp. 18 in our current book. **
