Park Avenue Elementary School, Danbury CT

PTO Meeting - Wednesday 6/11/14

Attendees: 4

1. Opening:

a. Started 6:35pm.

2. Treasurer’s Report (Stephanie Trzyna)

a. Spring book fair profit was $24. This fair is usually a break even item so the profit is most likely from donations.

b. Budget will stay basically the same. Next year’s budget has been proposed by Stephanie and includes an increase for busses due to more classes next school year after construction is complete.

c. Stephanie found out that the PTO insurance price will not increase with the increase in the number of children in the school.

d. Waiting for 5th grade T-Shirts $ to go through.

3. Fundraising update (Michelle Stanzione)

a. Box Tops – no one is officially in charge. Someone is needed to take this on for next school year. Mrs. Meeker has continued counting them with her father but it is not sure how long this will continue. It was suggested that the Box Tops be brought to the PTO meetings so that everyone can help.

b. Next fundraiser would be the Fall Fund Raiser at beginning of the school year with the booklets going out ASAP at the start of school. It was suggested that maybe instead of this everyone is asked to donate a set amount and then little or no fundraising is done for the remainder of the year. This idea came from how it is handled at other schools. It could be a boiler plate letter asking for $ from parents and grandparents that is sent out in the fall during the very first week of school or maybe even before school begins or in the students back to school letters.

4. PTO Officers:

a. Existing officers have elected to remain in their positions for now. Summary:

i. President = Michele Stanzione

ii. Treasurer = Stephanie Trzyna

iii. Secretary = Ellen Myest & Melissa Lefflbine

b. Suggestion was made to put of pictures of what the PTO does in the front of the school. This will help get attention to the benefits the school gains from this Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) at Park Avenue Elementary without parents/guardians having to take time to read.

c. How Rogers Park Middle School (RPMS) handles their PTO communications was mentioned.

d. It was suggested that maybe parents do not want to sit through the administrative portion of the meeting. They don’t like having to wait until after the “business” of the meeting is complete for the “real” meeting to start.

e. Park Ave PTO currently has an email address set up for it that Michelle manages.

5. General:

a. First day of school is Monday August 25th.

b. There will be about 185 more children in Park Avenue Elementary next school year due to redistricting after the construction is complete. This will bring the number of students at Park Ave up to almost 600.

c. New food rules at the school are even stricter than before. Now Box Top rewards can no longer be an ice cream party.

d. Nurse can always user donations of new underwear in small sizes and used clothes donations, especially pants.

e. Our PTO meetings are the 2nd Tuesday of every month. It is expected that the September PTO meeting will be officers only and that the first official meeting will be late September or at the normal October time slot.

6. Meeting adjourned 7:40pm.

Respectfully submitted:

Melissa Lefflbine
