Park Avenue Elementary School, Danbury CT

PTO Board Meeting - Tuesday 3/10/15

Attendance: 23

1. Opening: The meeting was called to order at 7:05.

· Mr. Krafick asked for a show of hand for those in attendance who speaks Spanish. A large number of parents raised their hands so he asked one parent to translate the meeting. He said in the future he would invite our parent liaison to interpret the meetings. He stressed the importance of having Spanish-speaking parents attend and participate in the PTO. Park Avenue school wants parents to be more engaged.

· Mr. Krafick introduced himself, Ms. Schork, the assistant principal as well as the PTO board members.

· There will be an upcoming Parent Project made possible through a grant from Comcast. It will take place on a Saturday and will most likely include beautifying the school grounds. Information will be sent out soon.

· Some of the Spanish-speaking parents expressed that they are hesitant to come into the school and participate in the PTO, even though they want to come in. Mr. Krafick said that notes will go home advising that there will be an interpreter at future meetings and asked if those in attendance would invite others to come.

· The majority of attendees have internet access. The PTO meeting minutes are available on the Park Avenue website. Moving forward, we will have meeting minutes translated into Spanish and posted on the website as well. Mr. Krafick will send home information this week on how to access the Park Avenue School website.

· The PTO would like to fund more programs. Mr. Krafick encouraged anyone with ideas to benefit the school and students to please let us know. He also asked for suggestions for new programs to expose the students to more than just the classroom. If anyone is part of a group (music, dance, theater, cultural, educational) that may want to come in, please let us know. Someone suggested projects for holidays such as Mothers & Father’s Day to engage the students.

2. Events/Fundraisers:

· Movie Night is scheduled for Friday, March 27th. The students will choose the movie from a few pre-selected movies. Michelle Stanzione is seeking donations of bottled water (no juice or soda), large bags of popcorn (available at Shop Rite) and non-peanut candy (skittles, kit-kat’s or m&m’s) to sell for $1 at Movie Night. Volunteers are also needed to help clean up.

· The Book Fair is scheduled for April 27th – 30th. Parent volunteers are needed.

· The Walk-A-Thon is scheduled for the week of April 20th. This is a way to raise money through outside exercise. Parent volunteers are needed.

· Melissa Lefflbine announced that Park Avenue School has double the number of box tops as Rogers Park Middle School.

3. Treasurers Report:

  • Stephanie Tryzna reported that the PTO has $13662 in the bank. The PTO has paid for buses to allow all Park Avenue students in grades 1-5 to attend the Rofers Park production of Peter Pan on March 12th.

4. New Business:

  • PTO officers will be up for election in June. Anyone interested is wecom to shadow current officers to learn what is required. The PTO also needs volunteers to help with fundraising and to run programs such as the Book Fair and Box Tops.

5. Closing: The next meeting will be Tuesday, April 7th at 7:00 because there is no school on the second Tuesday in April. The majority of attendees heard about the meeting through the written notice so the PTO will send notices home in addition to the email and robo-call. Meeting adjourned at 8:00 pm.

Respectfully submitted:
