Keeping Going

"The piper coming from far away is you

With a whitewash brush for a sporran

Wobbling round you, a kitchen chair

Seamus Heaney’s Brother Hugh is the piper in the poem Keeping Going;

A whitewash thread runs through the poem: the whitewash brush was borrowed from Carmel O’Neill of Claudy and a little chair was borrowed from Rosie McClelland one of my art teachers. The model is my grandson Ronan,

The poem; Ministry of Fear, is from The Spirit Level Faber & Faber 1996.
