What is Google Chrome?

According to Google:

Chrome is a fast, simple and secure web browser, built for the modern web. Browse quickly with the Chrome web browser on your Chromebook, Android phone and/or tablet. Sign in to sync your Chrome browser experience from your computer to bring it with you anywhere you go. Chrome lets you:

  • Search and navigate fast, directly from the same box; choose from results that appear as you type

  • Browse faster with accelerated page loading, scrolling and zooming

  • Open and quickly switch between an unlimited number of browser tabs. On your phone, flip through tabs the way you would fan a deck of cards. On your tablet, swipe from edge to edge to switch tabs.

  • Sign in to the Chrome web browser to sync your open tabs, bookmarks and omnibox data from your computer to your phone or tablet; pick up right where you left off

  • Send pages from Chrome on your computer to Chrome on your phone or tablet with one click and read them on the go, even when you’re offline

  • Browse privately in incognito mode

What this means for you as a user:

Because by default everything syncs and is personalised it is important to add a new Chrome user on any Windows or Mac device if it is a shared. If you worry about inadverntenly syncing your data with someone else, DO NOT sign in to Chrome. (There is no issue with Chromebooks because when you sign in that is already your Chrome experience)

Once two users have accidentally or purposefully synced their data, it is very difficult to untangle their data, which may include passwords and browsing history as well.

It is important to exercise caution and safety with what kind of data you want to have synced. You can also decide what syncs by exploring the "Advanced Sync Settings" option in Chrome Settings.
