Balance & Fact Fluency

Research supports a balanced math program.  Therefore, when we work on fluency, it is important that BPS educators are engaging students in conceptual knowledge (making sense of math), procedural knowledge (skills, facts, procedures), and application of the math to new situations.  The standards support this balance, emphasizing the importance of all 3 of these components.  

By knowing facts fluently, students free up their working memory to work on more difficult steps and tasks. As you think about "basic fact fluency", keep in mind that knowing "from memory" is different than strictly "memorization".  The FIRST step to fact fluency is having a strong conceptual understanding of the fact strategies (doubles, pairs of 10, X2 and X4- double double).  Take a look at the resources below to learn more about Fact Fluency.
