Her Coronation

Vendy, Anežka

Elizabeth's coronation took place on 2 June 1953 at Westminster Abbey in London.  She ascended the throne at the age of 25 after the death of her father George VI on 6 February 1952 and shortly thereafter was proclaimed Queen by her Privy and Executive Councils. She and her father were not in the line of succession but they were enthroned because of the Queen's uncle who abdicated.

The coronation took place more than a year later due to the tradition of allowing a reasonable period after the death of the monarch before such festivals took place. It also gave the planning committees ample time to prepare for the ceremony. During the service, Elizabeth took an oath, was anointed with holy oil, was endowed with robes and regalia, and was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Celebrations were held throughout the Commonwealth and a commemorative medal was issued. It was the only British coronation to be fully televised.
