Observed Buddhist Holidays and Ceremonies
Buddhist holidays are based on the lunar calendar and differ by country and tradition. Ceremonies may be scheduled periodically for Preceptor and Bodhisattva graduations and teacher ordinations. We observe the following:
Bodhisattva Ordination and Reception: second Sunday in Aug.
Ullambana Day and Potluck: last Sunday of the Oct.
Bodhi Day and Potluck: first Sunday of the Dec.
Preceptor Ordination and Reception: last Sunday in Nov.
Paranirvana Day and Potluck: first Sunday in Feb.
Buddha’s Birthday and Potluck: first Sunday in May
For our Buddhist holidays and ceremonies schedule, check the Calendar or subscribe to our weekly newsletter.
We are a warm and welcoming community, and we’re glad you’re here. Our Sunday Morning Service is a time for reflection, connection, and practice together. Whether you're exploring Buddhism or have an established practice, all are welcome.
Services include meditation, chanting, and a Dharma talk offering practical wisdom for daily life. After service, we invite everyone to stay for tea, conversation, and community connection.
To help create a peaceful and respectful space for all, we invite you to observe a few simple guidelines:
Please speak quietly before service begins to support those who wish to sit in silence.
Wear comfortable, modest clothing suitable for sitting meditation.
Avoid wearing fragrances, as some have sensitivities.
Remove your shoes before entering the Dharma Hall. Clean socks are provided if needed.
When entering or leaving the Dharma Hall, and when taking your seat, you are welcome to bow as a gesture of respect for the teachings and the space.
When service finishes, we encourage everyone to help prepare the space for the next gathering.
We are excited to practice with you!
We have attempted to follow the Buddha’s teachings on “expedient means” and have tailored our services to the American culture while remaining true to our roots. With very few exceptions all of our recitations are conducted in English. Here is a basic outline of our traditional Sunday service:
We recite the Refuge Vows and selected chants including the Morning Bell Chant and the Heart Sutra.
A teaching delivered by a Dharma Council member.
We sit in silent meditation for approximately 15-20 minutes.
We recite several gathas (verses).
After service, we have tea and socialize.
Wear whatever helps you feel comfortable and present. Simple, modest clothing in neutral or muted colors is appreciated to support a calm space. Please avoid perfumes or scented products, as some people are sensitive. Shoes are removed at the door. Feel free to bring socks or use the clean ones provided.
No. We provide chairs and meditation benches for those who have limitations and cannot sit in traditional positions on mats and cushions. We will help you find the best way for you to sit with us in meditation. To quiet the mind, we must be able to quiet the body.
Not at all. Everyone is welcome regardless of background or belief. Our services offer teachings and practices that can support anyone on a spiritual path.
First-time guests are encouraged to arrive at 9:15 a.m. for a brief introduction to the space and to answer any questions you may have. Participate as much or as little as feels right for you.
Please join us! We’re happy to welcome visitors and students exploring Buddhism. If you’re attending as part of a class or assignment, please join us for our Sunday 9:30 a.m. service, which is best suited for first-time guests.
Absolutely. Children are always welcome here. We love the presence (and sounds!) of little ones in our community.
If your child needs a break during service, you’re welcome to use our downstairs play area and return when ready. Our library also contains a selection of children’s books.
From September to May, we also offer Sangha School: a children’s program held during Sunday service. This is for kids who prefer a more age-friendly space to learn and play. Learn more about our Children’s Program. Our children's program will be reintroduced September of 2026.
We care about your comfort
Michigan weather can change quickly, especially as the seasons change. The temperature in the temple may also fluctuate. So for your comfort, wear layers of clothes that you can add or shed.
