TERM 2
From the three packages below, choose the one that you are most interested in.
Next, choose FOUR texts from that particular package.
Write the names of your chosen texts in the doc provided on the right.
Be prepared to review and change your topic, connections or texts.
If you have to wait for texts to arrive use your time wisely and work on another part.
Use clear headings and organise your own thoughts well when taking notes.
The quality of your topic, texts and notes will influence the quality of your final presentation, so put effort into this part of the process.
Use your notes to create new understandings about your topic and connections.
Critical theorists (philosophers, psychologists etc.) draw our attention to the researches and theories that have been compiled on the different issues and themes explored in our societies.
Have a look at the list of critical theorists listed in the doc on the right - see which one best fits your topic.
Each student will be provided with an individual copy of the booklet
Can one person change the world?
This package explores the social class hierarchy that dictates racism and discrimination against a certain group of people.
Through this package, we argue that the society has constructed such rules and regulations around what is accepted in the community that many forms of injustice is easily labelled as normal events happening in our society. Through the lens of social constructionism (Vivien Burr), students explore and examine how we, as a society, are unaware of the racist and discriminatory behavior we indulge with in our everyday lives without any consideration of how it impacts other people.
Are women valued in our society?
This package explores how the value of a woman has either increased or decreased over the years. We scrutinize the impacts of stereotypes against women restricting their potential to achieve their goals which may contradict the typical idea of a woman.
Over the past years, women have fought for their rights for equality and have succeeded in gaining some, however, gaining somewhat equal rights does not walk parallel with the stereotypes present against women.
A critical comparison between what Islam says about gender equality and what our cultures dictate is discussed through this package.
Are we born evil?
Christian moral theology claims that every individual is born with the taint of the original sin committed by Adam and Eve in the Garden by eating the forbidden apple. Contradictorily, Islam claims that every human is born pure, with no evil in their heart. Which one do you reason with?
The concept of evil is a complicated one. We discuss how evil behavior can be learnt through Shakespearean plays (Macbeth and Othello) and a few documentaries, and debate over William Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies - which depicts that humans are innately evil.
A critical examination of racism against African American from the 1600s to present times. All chosen texts discuss how the society has been blindly racist towards African Americans - providing opportunities for students to perceptively interpret how the current society is impacted by the stories of the past. Some of these stories such as The Hate U Give and To Kill a Mockingbird can be directly connected to some of the recent news events highlighting the injustice served towards African Americans, and how they responded to such events.
