Term 1

Te Whānau (The family)

Pepeha structure.docx

Activity 1: Pepeha

In Te Ao Māori (the Māori world), the pepeha is a formal way of introducing oneself to others. When uttered, it shows how one is connected to the land. It allows listeners to identify where the speaker is from and which iwi (tribe) one is affiliated to.

The pepeha links you to your place of origin which stems from your parents . To create your own pepeha, you will use the place of origin of BOTH dad or mum. At this point, it is important that you involve them in this task.

You will use the template on the left to create your own pepeha.

Start with the greeting: 'Tēnā koutou katoa' (Greetings to you all)

Step 1: Decide on a maunga (mountain) from your country of origin that is significant to you or your people. For example if you are from Fiji, you might find that your parents identify with Mt Tomanivi or with Hindu Kush if they are from Afghanistan.

Step 2: Decide on an awa/roto/moana (river/lake/ocean). For example if you are from Pakistan, you might find that your parents have tribal links to the Indus River or Attabad Lake.

Step 3: Decide on a waka. In Te Ao Māori, this is referred to as a traditional canoe. In your case, it could be as common as an airline. For example if you are from Afghanistan , the airline you identify with could be Ariana Afghan Airlines which flies nationally or Emirates which is an international airline.

Step 4: Decide on an iwi (tribe). For example if you are from Afghanistan mum or dad may identify with the Pashtun or Uzbek ethnic groups. Or if you are from Somalia your parents may have links to the Darod or Hawiye clans for example.

Step 5: State the country you are from. This is normally your birth country. Otherwise, you can state the country your parents originate from.

Step 6: Name your parents (mātua).

Step 7: All Māori iwi have links to a waka (traditional canoe), which is lead by a rangatira (chief). In this case our rangatira is Prophet Muhammad (saw).

Step 8: State your name

Step 9: Complete your pepeha with the statement

End with the statement: 'Nō reira, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa' (Therefore, greetings, thrice over)
