Sixth-grade students stocked the Little Free Pantry across the street from Mills Lawn with meal kits and recipes they prepared as part of their math PBL project called "Food Insecurity." Thank you to all the community members who made food donations towards this endeavor. The cold weather did not stop Mills Lawn Students from sharing their learning this past Sunday! Kelli Leingang-Pitrone, a Kindergarten parent and owner of Pitrone Farms, visited Mills Lawn School and demonstrated how to tap a maple tree. Kindergarten students were in awe as she drilled a shallow hole and gently tapped the spile in the trunk with a hammer. Students were able to look at samples of maple syrup when it is first out of the tree to when it is completely finished. It was a great surprise to come to school the next day and see sap collecting in the bags. Students are looking forward to sampling a little taste of maple syrup from the tree in their school playground.
Third graders visited Carillon Park on Friday, February 17th to visit the Wright Brothers National Museum and explore many Wright artifacts, including the 1905 Wright Flyer III (the only airplane designated a National Historic Landmark). This trip supported the upcoming unit in collaboration with National Aviation Hall Fame and ThinkTV PBS, and their new initiative, Discovering Flight with the National Aviation Hall of Fame.
6th Grade students visited the Cincinnati Art Museum to tour the Ancient Civilizations antiquities collection and explore over 6,000 years of history in the ancient worlds of Egypt, Greece, Mesopotamia, Rome, India, China and Japan. This experience helped students think about their driving question, How can we communicate Early River Civilizations’ cultural identity through historical artifacts?
Mills Lawn 5th graders attended STARBASE camp, a Department of Defense youth program, where they had an opportunity to engage in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) topics over the course of five days. They participated in several hands on activities with an experiential learning approach.
Inspired by a Facebook post that showed how empty the YS Free Pantry had become, 6th grade students investigated the question, How do we address the issues of food insecurity in our community? Students researched multiple interventions that have been shown to reduce food insecurity then collaborated to design a plan that supports our local community with affordable and healthy food options. The YS Free pantry was stocked with healthy and affordable meal kits.
