History

The Youth Philharmonic of Central Ohio (YPCO) is a symphony orchestra for young musicians founded in 2000. It is dedicated to providing musical enrichment to its members by promoting understanding and enjoyment of the orchestral experience. Musicians work in a collaborative atmosphere, with a strong emphasis on education and appreciation of the orchestral works being performed.

YPCO provides an opportunity not only for individual musical growth, but also for establishing and developing friendships among young musicians throughout Central Ohio. YPCO performs two formal concerts during the concert season.

STEVEN WEDELL

Conductor

Steven Wedell is known to audiences in Central Ohio as a professional violist, teacher, chamber musician, recitalist and conductor.


A native of Michigan, Mr. Wedell received his advance musical training at Western Michigan University and Boston University, where he studied with world- renowned violist Walter Trampler. Mr. Wedell joined the Columbus Symphony as a full-time violist in 1983 having served previously as the Principal violist of the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He has performed at numerous music festivals including the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, Kniesel Hall Chamber Music Festival in Blue Hill, Maine and the Scotia Festival of Music in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He currently performs and teaches at the MasterWorks Festival in Winona Lake, Indiana.


Mr. Wedell is dedicated to musical education for young musicians. He maintains a private teaching studio and serves as an Adjudicator for OMEA. As a Senior Lecturer at Otterbein University, Mr. Wedell is responsible for instruction in Applied Viola. He has also served as Lecturer in Applied Viola at The Ohio State University School of Music.


Steven Wedell is active performing chamber music with QUBE, the string quartet in residence at Otterbein University. Mr. Wedell was previously a co-founder of Quattro corde and the Seraphin String Trio.


Mr. Wedell currently serves as the conductor of the Youth Philharmonic of Central Ohio. He has also appeared as a conductor with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Upper Arlington Symphony, the Westerville Symphony and the Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra.
